KAIRO

When I got home that night, I realized I fucked up. I was more angry with myself than with Sage’s request, but I took it out on her anyway. I gave Sage a lot of leeway. Too much sometimes. More than I had given any woman because I was wise enough to know she was special.

The two most important things Pops taught me about being a man are to stand on your word and not run from your mistakes. A man owns them and stands in whatever storm stems from them because you made those decisions. Part of standing in the storm is acknowledging how you fucked up, so I sent Sage flowers to hopefully put a smile on her face because I know she didn’t get any rest after our argument.

When Sage’s name lit up my phone, I knew she had received them.

“Wassup Mama,” I answered.

“Thank you for my flowers,” Her voice held no emotional reaction, maintaining a calm and composed demeanor.

“You’re welcome.”

“Now you have everybody in the office wondering who my secret admirer is.”

“As long as them nigga’s know you got one.”

“Do I have one?” She asked to be facetious.

The laughter in my voice held a sharp edge, “I fucked up, so I’ll let you get that off this time but don’t ever say no dumb shit like that again.”

“You just stormed out, so I didn’t know.”

Sage knew, but her feelings were still hurt despite my apologetic gesture, and she wouldn’t take it easy on me because of it.

“I wasn’t mad at you. I was mad at me.” I could see her face in my head, brows furrowed, and lips pressed thin, trying to understand, “I should’ve stood my ground and kept shit business between us, but you make me need you too, Mama. Now I’m here doing shit I said I’d never do.” Shit, I refused to do with Jade, and I had known her much longer than Sage.

Sage couldn’t control her laughter, “The service is terrible here in the office. Can you repeat that?”

“I’m not doing that shit again, Sage, so next time it’s gon’ be what it’s gon’ be. Did you hear that?”

There was a momentary pause, likely because Sage knew what that meant.

Gram always said out of sight, out of mind is a real thing. The challenge is looking them in the eyes. Seeing their smile. Hearing their voice and being able to say this isn’t what I want. I couldn’t do that with Sage to save my fuckin’ life, nor could she.

“I hear you, Kairo. What are you doing today?”

“Golfing with my father-in-law.”

“What?” She stifled a chuckle, not expecting that response.

“Jeremiah and Jameson are going too.”

“Do you even know how to golf?”

“Fuck no,” I laughed, dreading spending my day on the golf course.

“You have fun with that.”

“I doubt that I will. It's just more hoops and shit to jump through.”

“Sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do. That’s life, Kairo.”

“Trust me, I know. I’d rather be doing you right now, but I can’t.
